Bringing humanitarian work to life to inspire public generosity

How do you raise awareness of subjects as complex as International Humanitarian Law (IHL) or the daily reality of NGOs in wartime? To take on that challenge, the Luxembourg Red Cross called on the expertise of Arcane Experience. Together, we created “Humanitarian in the Field”, a charity escape room that travels from venue to venue, showing the real work humanitarians do on the ground — and ultimately to encourage donations , without which none of it would be possible.

The challenge: turning information into civic engagement

The organisation wanted to go beyond news footage and reach the general public. The difficulty was designing a playful format capable of making the reality of conflict zones tangible. By conveying the rigour and the hurdles of crisis logistics, the aim was to build genuine trust with participants — the essential condition for encouraging financial support and sustaining the organisation’s missions.

Our answer: a mobile humanitarian tent built to travel

To meet the Red Cross’s constraints without compromising the player experience, our team developed amobile escape room set up inside a real field tent.

The impact: a debrief that connects the experience to the act of giving

The real strength of this charity escape room lies in its final phase. Once the mission is complete, the host becomes a facilitator , embedding the learning and opening up a conversation about the need for public support.

The spark to give

Highlighting the transparency and logistical rigour of NGOs to reassure citizens — an essential ethical lever for triggering vital financial donations.

This approach, where play triggers a wider realisation, is the method we apply to every project — whether the goal is to awaken civic awareness or to roll out a change management serious game inside major industrial groups.

Working with Arcane Experience allowed us to turn our International Humanitarian Law awareness game into a high-quality, modern escape room. Arcane's game design expertise was essential in orchestrating our ideas and bringing them to life.

FAQ: charity escape rooms for institutions and NGOs

Why is the escape room such a strong format for fundraising and awareness-raising?

L’game-based learning actively involves the participant. Putting people in charge of real logistical choices creates a far stronger emotional impact than a leaflet ever could. Understanding how every action on the ground matters legitimises the NGO’s work and naturally encourages the public to give.

How do you ensure scenarios are accurate on such sensitive subjects?

Every institutional project involves in-depth co-design with your subject-matter experts. For the Red Cross, each puzzle was validated to match field realities precisely. We apply that same methodological rigour when structuring the dynamics of our cross-generational management serious game , designed to bring leadership teams together.

Can this kind of mobile escape room be adapted to corporate CSR themes?

Absolutely. The lightweight structure (printed fabrics, portable modules, light props) is ideal for touring several company sites, schools or trade shows. Whether the subject is disability, diversity or climate issues, the mechanics stay the same. Have a cause to champion or a message to get across?
