Overview

The climate emergency sits at the heart of today’s environmental agenda, and it calls for deep change inside companies. With every IPCC report (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) painting a more alarming picture, organisations have a duty to raise awareness and apply current climate standards. La Fresque du Climat, originally created by Cédric Ringenbach, quickly established itself as a way of making climate issues accessible to everyone. Growing environmental pressure has led employers to run awareness sessions for employees and colleagues whose knowledge varies widely. People are more alert to the impacts of global warming and hungry for information. But getting to grips with IPCC reports without a scientific background is a challenge — and that’s exactly where gamification, warm and unifying by nature, comes into its own. To bring your clients on board with your company’s CSR policy, we offer the Arcane Experience version of La Fresque du Climat. Open your employees’ eyes and accelerate your company’s transformation with a team building session that’s as playful as it is instructive.

IPCC science, one card at a time

Global warming is nothing new, and it’s no secret to anyone. Climate sceptics will deny the facts, but for most of us it’s plain to see. What’s far less obvious is grasping the chains of cause and effect behind it. The complexity of climate mechanisms and the sheer number of players can leave employees adrift in an ocean of information, some of it far from accurate. What’s driving climate change? What are the impacts? Which sectors are affected? Raising awareness through a team building game lifts the veil on these open questions, in good spirits, without lecturing or judging your colleagues. Our reworked Fresque du Climat opens the doors of science to anyone, with no prior knowledge required. The workshop makes IPCC findings and projections simple to read, accessible and meaningful to as many people as possible. Through a team building activity, teams retrace how the effects of climate change unfold, then consider the everyday actions that will reduce your carbon footprint.

Step by step

The world is undergoing profound climate shifts that are upending natural cycles and threatening the planet as we know it. You have 3 hours to piece together the links between climate disruption and human activity. This collaborative workshop encourages participants to pool what they know about climate issues, drawing on the collective intelligence of the group. Players then identify the many causes and consequences of human activity on the climate. The solidarity between participants reinforces the supportive spirit of La Fresque du Climat. This awareness-raising team building workshop helps everyone take ownership of climate issues and unites employees around individual and collective commitments. It uses emotion as a lever to open minds, bring your teams together and put your organisation’s sustainability commitments into action.

La Fresque du Climat aims to bring every stakeholder in your company into society’s ecological transition, by spreading an understanding of climate issues quickly and effectively. The teaching materials draw on the reference scientific database compiled by the IPCC. Climate change is a complex collective challenge, and one widely misunderstood. In 3 hours, participants face an avalanche of revelations designed to trigger a chain of constructive actions. The workshop is built like a reaction chain, with a single goal: low-carbon growth shared by a whole community of stakeholders. Together, participants decode the facts established by IPCC reports, debate them and work out what to do about the climate emergency. The workshop calls on the collective intelligence of the group, guided by a culture of transparency and mutual respect. La Fresque uses the mechanics of play to reach the tipping point that dramatically accelerates society’s sustainable transformation.

Employees are gathered by our lead facilitator, who introduces the purpose and objectives of La Fresque along with the rules of play. After a short presentation of the mission of La Fresque and the work of the IPCC, employees are split into teams of 4 to 8 players and receive their first set of cards. The game features 44 cards divided into 5 sets. This sequencing lets participants analyse each card closely and connect them more easily. Players then arrange the cards in order and submit them to the facilitator for validation. The facilitator comments on the diagrams and connections, adjusting them where needed. They then hand out the second set and repeat the process through to the last one. This phase of reflection and scientific exchange lasts an hour and a half. Next, players give their creativity free rein and customise their fresco using the props supplied by the facilitator. To check what participants have taken in and confirm their understanding of climate issues, a nominated spokesperson presents their group’s fresco and its chronology out loud. The final part (50 min) is dedicated to the debrief, where players share how they feel and discuss the individual and collective actions needed to reach net zero.

Logistics

La Fresque du Climat is a participatory, creative workshop, and participants move around their fresco throughout. Players therefore need freedom of movement to reposition cards on a board, but a simple meeting room is all it takes to host a Fresque du Climat. It’s an indoor team game. We bring an easel so everyone can see the fresco clearly. You’ll need one chair per person, in conference layout.

Why run a team building session on climate awareness

01
Train your teams

Climate disruption speaks to everyone. But when it comes to explaining what triggered it and what it leads to, very few can. Bringing your employees on board with your CSR policy is no small task when their knowledge of climate issues varies so widely. Awareness is the first step towards accepting environmental challenges. Once informed and aware, your employees will be far more willing to champion your CSR commitments and more motivated to work together to reach your goals. But talking about climate change isn't easy. It's a complex and sometimes divisive subject. That's why La Fresque du Climat draws on gamification and team building to make the training playful, accessible and creative for all your colleagues. The visual nature of the fresco helps the messages stick by engaging participants' senses. As well as raising awareness, this team building session will strengthen cohesion across your teams.

02
Bring your teams together

Using play to strengthen cohesion and unite teams is well known, proven and documented. But who would have thought an awareness workshop could be just as unifying? The playful side of La Fresque du Climat lightens the weight of the scientific data and draws participants in. Unlike top-down conferences, employees are active in their own learning and take part with real energy in uncovering the environmental messages behind the cards. United by a shared problem, players voice their opinions, compare theories and defend their reasoning until one logical diagram wins majority approval. Climate change is a collective challenge, the result of a long succession of destructive human activities. Personal and professional boundaries between individuals and organisations fall away. Everyone is in the same boat. Tackling its effects calls for collective action born of shared reflection. The collective intelligence that emerges from these exchanges binds participants together around a challenge that affects both their working and personal lives. In that sense, La Fresque is a genuinely collaborative tool: perfect for team cohesion and for uniting people across disciplines.

03
Accelerate your organisation's transformation

Global warming is a major challenge that demands an immediate response from decision-makers and individuals alike, to limit the long-term effects already forecast. La Fresque du Climat speeds up the understanding of climate issues that life on Earth depends on. The game puts participants in a position of strength, where each person's thinking drives the whole group forward. This group dynamic enables teamwork and the productive friction of collective ideas, which in turn sparks innovative solutions. The freedom to be wrong and the absence of judgement reinforce a climate of trust that benefits your organisation's sustainable development. Our reworked fresco aims to reach a threshold of exponential growth, passing climate literacy on to the people in your company who haven't yet been reached. The domino effect kicks in when employees share your values and support your CSR policy. Out of the usual working setting and thanks to the playful format, employees shed limiting professional barriers and speak openly. It's really the debrief that bonds your team around what's been shared and creates momentum towards turning ideas into action.

A closer look at the Fresque du Climat association

The Fresque du Climat association was founded in 2018 on the initiative of Cédric Ringenbach, with one main goal: to raise awareness of climate change among as many people as possible. Its decentralised, participatory model has attracted more than 30,000 volunteers across some fifty countries. La Fresque quickly became a benchmark teaching tool and is now translated into more than 45 languages. Simple, playful, collaborative, visual, creative and scientific, it has already won over more than 700,000 participants worldwide. The association continues to expand its international network, passing on scientific knowledge effectively and accessibly. From individuals to large companies and transition consultancies, it targets every audience to maximise its impact.

What’s at stake with climate change

Since 1988, the IPCC has been tasked with assessing the scale of climate disruption worldwide and identifying priority areas for adapting to it and limiting it. Every report now points to a considerable rise in average global temperature compared with the last century. That upward shift is driving widespread degradation and climate disruption. Melting ice caps and rising sea levels are among the best known. But the challenges of climate change go far beyond these consequences and affect every vital pillar of the planet.

What it means for human activity

Human activities such as industry, agriculture, construction and transport burn fossil fuels to meet the needs of the population. But burning those fuels feeds CO2 into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse effect. The resulting rise in water and air temperatures disrupts the natural water cycle and threatens colonising insects, forced to migrate towards regions with milder conditions. Droughts, cyclones, floods and heatwaves have multiplied, destroying harvests. This disruption is a serious threat to agricultural production. In some regions (Asia, Africa, tropical and subtropical zones), yields could collapse, causing famine and severe food crises.

Climate disruption

The industrialisation inherited from past centuries and the interconnection of the world have considerably increased society’s greenhouse gas emissions. Some of these gases are absorbed naturally by plants, oceans and other carbon sinks. Absorbing CO2 warms the atmosphere and the oceans, which throws ocean currents off balance, and they in turn disrupt the water cycle. This imbalance alters the frequency, duration, intensity and geographic location of natural disasters and major weather events. Biodiversity is on the front line, a direct victim of these upheavals.

Picto Coeur

Health and social challenges

More frequent natural disasters would trigger major migration flows, increasing tensions at the borders of countries at risk of flooding. Some island areas could disappear altogether. Heatwaves, fires, floods and storm surges are direct dangers to populations and their homes. Disruption of the water cycle would push disease-carrying flying insects towards areas with no natural protection. Combined with falling agricultural yields, these consequences would provoke multiple armed conflicts, dividing nations and fuelling discrimination.

Picto Bio

Impact on biodiversity

Ocean acidification caused by CO2 absorption threatens the development of marine micro-organisms, which are essential to marine biodiversity and to the balance of many ecosystems. Disruption of the water cycle and rising surface temperatures endanger land biodiversity. Global warming could wipe out 20 to 30% of animal and plant species. The consequences would be disastrous for human settlements and would upend the entire animal food chain.

3 reasons to choose a serious game

01 Educate and inform through play

A serious game is any activity whose primary purpose is not entertainment but information. La Fresque du Climat is first and foremost about raising your employees' awareness of climate issues. Even so, the playful dimension is essential to getting the most from your awareness campaign. A serious game uses the mechanics of play to convey informative messages. To meet its educational goal, La Fresque du Climat draws on the imaginative world games create and on creative multimedia resources to make its content appealing. The design brings the serious messages to the fore and sparks participants' desire to learn. Its informative power lies in the interaction between the learner and the message. Active in their own training, players learn by doing and by putting the issues into real-life situations.

02 Modernise your employer brand

Awareness-raising through play is far more appealing than a slide deck or a top-down conference. Bringing a serious game into your HR process refreshes your identity and strengthens your appeal. Employees expect their employer to recognise, value and thank them. That recognition can take the form of bonuses, gifts or other benefits in kind. But generations are changing. Employees want to build connections and share the rewards of collective work. A serious game helps retain your people by uniting them around a serious shared challenge. That educational angle also supports employee development and skills growth. New candidates, for their part, pay close attention to the social and environmental values an employer stands for. Having a CSR approach is no longer enough to stand out from competitors. Far more than words, a company has to deliver on its commitments at every level and towards all its stakeholders. The serious game is a modern, innovative and intergenerational tool that strengthens team cohesion and employees' buy-in to their employer's values. Contemporary awareness-raising also answers employees' search for meaning. Play builds attachment to the company and fuels motivation.

03 Involve and motivate your employees

Bringing employees on board is no easy task for employers. Thanks to its level of immersion, a serious game plunges participants into a fictional world that makes serious messages far easier to absorb. La Fresque du Climat uses striking visuals to make the challenge of climate change tangible. A picture is worth a thousand words, and play understands that perfectly. The workshop uses powerful images that speak to participants' emotional intelligence, opening minds and generating a virtuous circle of action. Play is entertaining, and engaging by nature. A serious game creates an analogy between professional mechanisms and game mechanics. It activates individual psychological levers — creativity, curiosity, intellectual stimulation, the desire for human interaction — that multiply employee motivation. The rush of emotions, positive or negative, and players' active participation strengthen their commitment. Raising awareness through play also contributes to employee wellbeing by making cohesion a priority in your awareness campaigns. Want to know more?
