Digital escape box

The challenge
ENGIE GBS is an ENGIE Business Unit bringing together hundreds of very different support functions. New employees often struggle to grasp how the BU is structured and what makes it unique. ENGIE invests heavily in its employer brand and is always looking for ways to appeal to outside talent. Across its many onboarding sessions, ENGIE GBS wanted to use play to inform new joiners and bring them together.
We created a physical escape box for ENGIE GBS in late 2019, and it was a real hit. Then the pandemic made in-person onboarding impossible. No matter: we set about turning their escape box into a digital version.
Our response
Starting from the existing game — take a look at the success story on that project— we designed a version that could be played remotely. The rules were reworked to meet today’s needs: building connections at a distance, getting to grips with remote working tools, encouraging group dynamics and, above all, having a great time despite the circumstances. We kept the “project mode” mechanic from the physical version and adapted it to remote play. After all, that’s exactly what we’ve all learnt to do over the past few months. The digital escape box is played using a video conferencing tool and a website we built specially for it. No video game here, just a genuinely collaborative game played with the most ordinary of work tools.
The format
A digital escape box combining a video conferencing tool and a dedicated website, for 10 to 300 players at once. An evolution of the original game that’s here to stay — it’s simple and modern to run.
